5 Ways the VS200 Slide Scanner Can Benefit Your Research

Digitizing whole glass slides is an essential tool in many modern research applications. Digital slides can be viewed, managed, and stored electronically, helping scientists collaborate, generate quantitative data for image analysis, and experience important breakthroughs. Consequently, the features and capabilities of your slide scanner are critical.

We designed our SLIDEVIEW VS200 slide scanner with a suite of features that benefit life science researchers. Here are 5 ways the VS200 slide scanner can help you overcome common research challenges.

1. Produce high-resolution images for quantification.

Researchers need to see the whole picture—not just a piece of it. Low image quality can increase your chance of overlooking important information during quantitative analysis.

To provide high-quality virtual slide images, the VS200 slide scanner offers:

  • High-performance X Line objectives with simultaneously improved numerical aperture, chromatic correction, and flatness
  • A light path optimized to work with the X Line objectives to reduce spherical aberration and provide more homogenous illumination
  • Uniform fluorescence illuminator with a fly-eye lens to evenly distribute light across the entire field of view
  • True color LED to ensure purple, cyan, and pink stains are correctly represented, imaged, and rendered

The result? High-resolution images that can help you create seamlessly tiled images of large specimens, such as a mouse brain or tissue section.

Start with an overview of your tissue section, and then zoom down to look at the details.

2. Optimize observations with 5 imaging modes.

Scientists often need to combine different observation methods to view structures that are only visible under certain conditions—yet many slide scanners offer little to no flexibility.

The VS200 slide scanner combines five imaging modes in one system with mix-and-match observation method capabilities, so you can find the most appropriate method for your application. Switch between brightfield, fluorescence, darkfield, phase contrast, and polarization—or combine different observation methods. It’s up to you.

Another benefit is the automatic oiler for immersion media imaging. It automatically dispenses oil, silicone oil, or other immersion media in manual and continuous automatic modes.

3. Scan more images in less time.

For many researchers, digitizing glass slides is a time-consuming and tedious task. It can be frustrating to continuously load new batches of slides when you want to move on to image analysis.

The VS200 slide scanner offers novel solutions to help you quickly scan more images:

  • Increased slide capacity: The loader holds up to 35 sample trays with 210 26 × 76 mm (1 × 3 in.) slides. Now you can run slides in one large batch to finish overnight and have more time for analysis.
  • Hot-swap functionality: You can add additional trays to the loader before all the trays of a given project have been scanned.
  • Scans multiple slide sizes at once: The V200 supports 26 × 76 mm (1 × 3 in.), 52 × 76 mm (2 × 3 in.), 76 × 102 mm (3 × 4 in.), and 102 × 127 mm (4 × 5 in.) slides. RFID chips enable the loader to automatically detect trays, the number of slides, and the size of the slides while the integrated barcode reader automatically captures and records the slide information.
  • Faster scanning: Robotics in the loader quickly load and unload trays while coordinating with the focus and scan unit for fast image acquisition.

4. Streamline workflows with an intuitive, powerful user interface.

A complicated and cumbersome user interface can force you to repeat tasks—taking valuable time out of your busy workday.

With your workflow in mind, we engineered the VS200 slide scanner with an intuitive user interface that provides the level of control you need for a given project. Use quick mode to start scanning in as few as two clicks. For a more customized scan, switch to expert mode.

You can also save and recall acquisition settings to streamline repetitive workflows and standardize operations, as well as share projects with colleagues to collaborate.

5. Easily and securely view and share digital slides.

We know high-resolution digital slide images are typically too large to share online—making collaboration and remote analysis difficult.

Our free OlyVIA image viewer software solves this common challenge. It enables you to easily view, annotate, compare, and share VS200 virtual slide images on a database. All you need to access OlyVIA is a modern Internet browser that supports HTML5, such as Google Chrome and Mozilla Firefox, and a local image server or thin client.

If you need a secure server to store your digital slide images, leverage our optional Net Image Server (NIS) SQL database. With this versatile image access and storage solution, you can safely and efficiently share images on a web browser or our OlyVIA software.

Powering Productivity with the VS200 Slide Scanner

These five benefits can help researchers stay more productive and organized to solve challenges in brain, cancer, and stem cell research, as well as drug discovery.
