Olympus and Grundium Partner to Make Digital Pathology More Accessible

Collaboration creates a cost-effective telepathology solution for medical professionals

WALTHAM, Mass., July 19, 2021—Olympus and Grundium Ltd. are collaborating to combine their expertise in microscopy optics and digital imaging to benefit pathology. Grundium has incorporated Olympus’ high-performance X Line™ objectives into its Ocus® portable single slide scanners to enable convenient creation and sharing of high-quality digital slides. The combined solution brings flexibility and reliability to pathologists’ remote consultations. In addition, as part of the partnership, Olympus now offers the Ocus product line with integrated X Line objectives across Europe and North America.

Increasing Need for Remote Collaboration Tools

Consultation and collaboration with colleagues have always been important aspects of pathology. Now, with telework on the rise, pathologists require agile solutions enabling them to share their slides, without concerns about image quality or cumbersome methods.

Truly Portable and Collaborative Telepathology

With the addition of Grundium’ Ocus single slide scanners, Olympus expands its range of digital pathology solutions. A cost-effective telepathology instrument, Ocus scanners accelerate workflows for applications requiring peer consultation, including intraoperative frozen section review, Rapid On-Site Evaluation (ROSE) and second opinions. Pathologists can use the Ocus scanner’s high portability and wireless connectivity to rapidly scan and share slides from any location. This flexibility enables experts to immediately evaluate samples remotely.

High-Quality Digital Slides to Assist Analysis

Integrated into Ocus scanners, X Line objectives’ advanced optical performance optimizes the quality of the digital slides produced. Fabricated using a proprietary lens-polishing technology, X Line objectives are the culmination of Olympus’ more than 100 years of optical design and manufacturing experience. Offering a high numerical aperture (NA), improved image flatness, and a wide chromatic correction range, X Line objectives provide the brightness, resolution, and color accuracy that pathology requires. Improved Customer Support

In addition to distributing Ocus scanners, Olympus will now also provide local sales and after-sales support for those equipped with X Line objectives in Europe and North America.

The partnership between Olympus and Grundium not only provides a practical and affordable digital pathology solution for today, but also sows the potential to innovate new and better imaging solutions for tomorrow.

“Working with Olympus has been very easy from the start. It feels great to be making an impact on digital pathology together. Grundium Ocus® microscope scanners combined with top-level Olympus optics are a great fit to enable medical professionals to work faster and easier,” says Davide D’Incau, Grundium Sales Director.
