The development and improvement of fluorescent proteins for super resolution imaging techniques over the past couple of decades is a very interesting story, with advancements in super resolution imaging techniques being the driving force behind optical highlighter fluorescent protein development.

There are many cases of fluorescent proteins misbehaving or displaying odd behaviors. Some of these pathways can be problematic for imaging techniques; however, some behaviors can be useful and have been taken advantage of in optical highlighter fluorescent protein development.
